Lee's scope to disregard the current sentiment in favour of immigration curbs is limited by the small majority under which his ruling Action party is in power following last year's elections. This was the smallest margin since Singapore became independent in 1965 and reflects growing concerns by citizens over the rising cost of living and competition with foreigners for jobs and housing.
